Cattails have many tiny flowers growing at the top of the stem.
The upper part, with the male flowers, eventually looses the flowers, leaving only a bare stem.
The female flowers are located on the lower, brown portion (15-20 cm.)

The Cattail has dry oval seeds about 1 mm. long that will float and they have long hairs on the base with fluffy appearance.

The Red-winged Blackbird's nest is built in cattails, rushes, grasses, sedge, or in alder or willow bushes.
